The French ensemble 'Le Caravansérail' was created in 2015 by the harpsichordist Bertrand Cuiller. During his residency as harpsichord player at Royaumont, Bertrand Cuiller decided together with Sylvie Brély, director of the keyboard program, to embark on a great adventure and to create a new ensemble that could be an extension of his activity as soloist, but also a continuation of his visions, and a friendly place for other musicians. The new ensemble should be flexible enough to be a chamber music group or an opera orchestra, depending on the circumstances.Furthermore the ensemble should be able to perform, according to the needs and desires, all the repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries, and possibly some music of the 21st century as well. And last but not least it should be an ensemble which can succeed on its own at the end of a three years residence.
The idea has taken shape! Le Caravansérail has already realized a number of succesful concert projects and joined the quality CD label Harmonia Mundi:
2015: Domenico Scarlatti / Georg Frideric Handel: Ex-Aequo
2016: 'A Fancy', concerts and a cd recording for Harmonia Mundi
2017: The six Brandenburg Concerts by Johann Sebastian Bach
In 2018 Le Caravansérail was chosen by the Cooperative for a big opera tour with Handels Rinaldo,in a spectecular staging by Claire Dancoisne (20 staged performances in France and one concert performance in Belgium).
Today, the whole is supported in structuring assistance by Drac Ile de France. Le Caravansérail is a member of the FEVIS network.
